How It Began
I can vividly recall spending the last 13 Halloweens sifting through candy at the end of the night, picking out the few pieces that my sister, Amy, can have, and giving the rest to my dad to take to work with him. Usually a trip to the grocery store happened before or after trick or treating, to supplement her candy with allergy-friendly Gummy Bears, (Amy's fav.)
If my family added up all of the time spent reading labels, researching manufacturers, looking up recipe substitutions and making special requests to food service staff- I would be afraid to know the number.
Working in restaurants as a chef for several years, I have seen the impact that allergies can have on families. It was a great feeling being able to talk to guests with special diets, share a little of my own experience with them and assure them that I understood where they were coming from.
The moments that we spend with loved ones are precious. Birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, even dropping off your kids at school. These are all times that are meant to be enjoyed, but sometimes the anxiety we feel around food can make it difficult.
